KSHSAA 2025 Solo & Ensemble Festival Procedure

- Before the KSHSAA 2025 Solo & Ensemble festival, prepare your music by doing three things: write your name and contact information inside the front cover of your book, write measure numbers in red ink above each bar line of your piece, and erase all practice markings you do not wish the judge to see. No photocopies are allowed at festivals.
- Plan to arrive at least 45 minutes before your performance time.
- Find your performance room prior to proceeding to the practice rooms.
- Go to a practice room to warm up. You may need to wait until a room becomes available. Limit your warm-up to five minutes so that the room can be used by other students. Use your time to prepare physically and mentally for your performance.
- Go to your performance room. Check in with the room monitor.
- Have your music opened to the correct page for the judge.
- When it is your turn to perform, stand facing the judge.
- When the judge is ready for you to perform, announce your name, your school, your grade, the song title, the song composer, and the name of your accompanist. Make sure to smile.
- Re-check your posture, breathe, and perform your song.
- Smile and bow (first to the judge, then to the audience if they are not seated in the same area).
- Wait outside the room until your music is returned to you by the door monitor. Do not leave without your music!
- Scores may be posted in a common area or posted on a website. Be patient as you wait for your scores: judges are only permitted to award a certain number of “I” ratings, so they often need to listen to a dozen students before they can determine how students compare to one another.
- Performers who receive a ‘I’ rating will go on to perform at the KSHSAA state level.
- Score sheets will be delivered to your school teacher. Bring your score sheet to your next Vance Music lesson.
